Windows x is missing the ability to natively play DVD movies.
surely information technology should be able to read files. I'm non trying to play a picture show just view stored files.

Kudos Linda, Aforementioned here, mine stopped working since the anniversary, update, sounds like A lot of Hardware& softwre failed since then?

i. Internal bulldoze
ii. All disks elicit same trouble - 'insert deejay'
3. Acer Aspire 5551 - drive: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT30N
Commuter in use: 10.0.14393.0 21/06/2006 MS
for you lot info:
1) Bulldoze burns 100% ok (disc verify and browse perfect)
2) Drive reads data 100% ok (I tin can read data using an boosted software, just not in file explorer)
iii) I tin Not browse the contents of any disc from windows file explorer
Tried
Step 1:I suggest you to check if there is any yellowish exclamation signal on CD/DVD in Device Managing director.
- Press Windows + Ten keys from the keyboard, click on Device Manager .
- Aggrandize DVD/CD ROM drives , right click on the driver.
- Click on Properties and check the device status
Step ii: If the drive is being detected in Device Manager try the below to update the drivers:
-
Right click onBeginning button and selectDevice Managing director.
-
ExpandDVD/CD ROM drives, correct click on the drivers and click onUpdate commuter software.
-
Restart the reckoner and check if the consequence persists.
Step 3: If the device is not detected on your computer effort to run Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.
Hardware and Devices troubleshooter checks for common problems and makes sure that whatever new device or hardware connected to your PC is installed correctly.
- Printing Windows cardinal from the keyboard, type Troubleshooting and select it.
- Click on view all choice on the upper left corner of Troubleshooting window.
- Select the Hardware and Device options from the list.
- ClickSide by side to run the Hardware and Device Troubleshooter

hmm, a few "out there" musings...
do cd's work ? (hypothesis: it'due south one of the optical drives which only shows up as a cd drive until you actually put a dvd into it)
is autoplay off ? (hypothesis: 1000$ is trying to forcefulness people to use autoplay, or they copied some XBox lawmaking over without due diligence)
is it SATA or IDE ? (hypothesis, one or the other is messed upwardly)
Only trying to jar something loose.
